Slide Curtains!

March 19th, 2010

I feel a little bad because I forgot where I originally saw this idea and am too lazy to look for it, but basically they had these curtains of like, 1000 color slide negatives and it looked way way awesome. I only had about 8 rolls worth of slides, so I made them into a little baby window cover with lots of space between the slides and kind of hanging in weird dangly strands. Whatev, I think it looks totes cool!

I kept reheating a needle and then sticking the needle through the corners of the slides so I would be able to thread them together. It was actually a big pain in the ass, to be quite honest. Then threading them together was an even bigger pain in the ass, woo! But it is done and I’m very happy with the weirdo effect it puts in my kitchen!

Oh, and of course it would be snowing the day I try to take these pictures.  lose.

Covering Our Couch: Part 1

June 30th, 2009

Me and David adopted this small sectional couch from a friend last year and I had every intention of immediately covering it with some crazy fabric.  Well… I procrastinated, but now I’m finally working on covering it!  I feel silly posting these pictures because it will show how hilarious and (I hate this word, but it really fits) “ghetto” our cover job really was.  We wanted to cover it with a fun, crazy color because we’re going to have to buy new couches in a couple of years anyway, might as well have fun with these :) . Having no experience and just guessing our way through this, I think we did a pretty okay job!

On to the process!

Teethy Soaps!

June 7th, 2009

(sorry for the less than amazing photos, but you get the idea)

A couple of weeks ago I had this amazing moment when my teeth shaped ice cube molds were sitting on the counter next to my soap making stuff (which I just got and have had a little bit of fun with).  All of the sudden it hit me: oh my gosh, teeth shaped soaps!

They are super easy to make, all you do is melt white soap and pink soap (which is made by adding a couple of drops of pink soap dye to white soap and mixing) simultaneously in two separate pots.  You will want to make quite a bit more pink soap than white soap.  When they are fully melted, take a spoon full of white soap and drip it into the teeth areas of your Fred Frozen Smiles ice cube mold.  Quickly, pour in the pink soap until the mold is full.  Let the soap sit until it’s dry, pop it out of the mold, and you have some adorably weird teeth shaped soaps.

After I made these soaps I realized that there was no way I was possibly the first person to come up with this idea, so I did a little googling and found these, as well as many others.  Boo hoo :( .  But now you know how to make them!

HOWTO::RECIPE Chocolate Peanut Butter

March 8th, 2009

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 2 pounds roasted peanuts (both salted, or one pound salted, one pound unsalted)
  • 3 tablespoons oil (peanut oil if you have it.  I use olive oil and it’s fine.)
  • 12-15 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 12-15 tablespoons cocoa powder

1. Start by pouring the two pounds of peanuts into your food processor.  Turn it on (warning: it will be really loud!) and let it go until the peanuts are in very fine pieces.  This will probably take a couple of minutes.

Scrabble Table Redux

October 17th, 2008

Could it be?!  Why yes, I did finish the scrabble table I was working on in this post. I finished it a while ago, actually, it just completely slipped my mind to make a post about it.  I ended up buying a fifteen dollar table from bed bath and beyond that was meant to be covered and used as a night stand.  Instead of covering it I coated it with the scrabble pieces from about seven games!  There are lots of words hidden in there, but don’t worry, none of them are dirty :) .

(if you’re interested in doing this, just get some wood glue to hold the pieces in place and then spray at least 3 coats of clear paint on top to seal it.)

On an unrelated note, I’ve been working on the shop and am really excited about it so far!  I’ll probably end up opening it back up some time in the next week. :) :) :)

Aram Rolls

October 9th, 2008

I’ve always had a place in my heart for yummy aram rolls. I’ve been making them since I was probably 12 years old.  If you’re looking for a super easy snack to put out when you have guest over or to bring to a picnic, I highly recommend these!  For mine I like to put in cream cheese, spinach, swiss cheese, turkey breast, and dried salami, but really anything will work.

Howt::Recipe Yummus Hummus

October 4th, 2008

I love love love to eat (and make) hummus, and here’s my favorite recipe.  I’ve been playing around with a few recipes and put more of what I like and less of what I don’t.  Hummus is super easy to make, all you do is take all of the ingredients listed below and throw them in a food processor until it’s creamy with a slightly grainy looking texture.  It’s amazing how much less expensive it is to make hummus than to buy it at the store!

Ingredients:

  • 2 16 ounce cans of garbanzo beans (chickpeas), drains and rinsed
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp -1 tbsp crushed red pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 – 2/3 cup lemon, to taste
  • 1/3 cup tahini
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/3 cup olive oil OR garlic flavored olive oil

Like I said above, just throw all of the ingredients in the food processor!  Serve it chilled with some pitas (or if you ate all of your pitas like I did, crackers taste fine as well).
