You know how sometimes you read something and you know it’s something you want to hear every day?  Well when I saw this Velvet Underground lyric on Milk Children, I knew this was one of those occasions :].  So… I made stencils and hung it on my bedroom wall!  If anyone is interested, I have a desktop wallpaper version of the second image here!  Have a nice day :].

Scrabble Table Redux

October 17th, 2008

Could it be?!  Why yes, I did finish the scrabble table I was working on in this post. I finished it a while ago, actually, it just completely slipped my mind to make a post about it.  I ended up buying a fifteen dollar table from bed bath and beyond that was meant to be covered and used as a night stand.  Instead of covering it I coated it with the scrabble pieces from about seven games!  There are lots of words hidden in there, but don’t worry, none of them are dirty :) .

(if you’re interested in doing this, just get some wood glue to hold the pieces in place and then spray at least 3 coats of clear paint on top to seal it.)

On an unrelated note, I’ve been working on the shop and am really excited about it so far!  I’ll probably end up opening it back up some time in the next week. :) :) :)

Howto: Contact Paper Wall Art

October 1st, 2008

If you’re anything like me you love window shopping at the numerous online vinyl art shops (blik is of course a fave).  Unfortunately, I’m on a college student budget and can’t really afford to spend 50-100 dollars on something that just sits on my wall.  Me and David really wanted to paint the apartment but realized it’s kind of frivolous since we plan on moving in a year.  I decided to get some contact paper and make my own wall decorations, the place was just looking so dull!

I wanted to make something really simple, so this is what I came up with :) .  All you need is:

  • exacto-knife with a new blade (it goes dull quick with this project)
  • black contact paper (surprisingly hard to find, but amazon.com has it)
  • sharp pair of scissors
  • assorted circles (I chose an old record, a coaster, a shot glass, and a terrible downloaded horror movie DVD)

From here all you do is find a surface you don’t mind messing up a little (I always use the bottom of my coffee table :-/ ), spread out the contact paper and cut out some circles with the exacto-knife.  Fold the circles up like you used to do when you were little to make snowflakes (if you’ve never done this, here’s a tutorial.  SKIP STEP 6.)  Now all you have to do is peel the backs off and stick them to the wall!

Super cheap way to decorate.  I also did some small polka dots on my bathroom wall.

Scrabble Table Gone Bad

June 14th, 2008

scrabble

Ugh, so I’ve been all over ebay trying to find the best deals on scrabble tiles because we had this great idea to cover a table in them for our apartment. I finally found 500 of them for 40 dollars (which is actually a deal, as high as that is) and thought we’d be set.

I went to test them out on the table and to my horror this is what I saw

scrabble

After measuring it I saw that we’d have to spend at least another 80 dollars in tiles to cover the table! :( . So now we’re probably going to end up just making a couple of end tables (an end table only needed about 350 tiles).

Anyways, I figured I’d share the idea on here, if you’re willing to spend that kind of money! After the tiles have been glued down (spell out some words in there!) make sure you coat the table in resin so when you spill grape juice all over the table it won’t stain :) .

Tacky, Lovely House

May 21st, 2008

I’m moving out in a couple of months, so instead of my usual online clothing shopping addiction, it’s house ware. I want every single one of these things on etsy, as well as just about… everything listed. They’re a little out of the range I want to spend, so I’m going to try to recreate them. I’m sorry etsy house ware sellers, for being an idea thief. And maybe make them a little more boy-friendly.

cup chime

I love this chime idea! How adorable is that coffee cup and bird? I’m def going to make one of these from some sort of vintage teacup I find at goodwill.

Such a great material. I wish I could get my hands on that material to make purses or something.

This one reminds me so much of my grandma When she was getting a little loopy in the end (I can say that without sounding offensive, right? She had a sense of humor) she gave me this crazy looking dress with a pattern almost identical to that. I’m thinking of cutting it up and making it into something like this. I’ll never wear the dress, so at least it will get some good use if I play around with it.

Now this I am 100% making. I saw a few scrabble clocks with looking about on etsy, and imo they were all overpriced, but such a great idea! Me and the boy play a lot of scrabble, so I think I’m going to cut my board up and do this (he has the deluxe edition, anyway).

Lastly, I want to get some crazy sign that has nothing to do with us and put it outside our door. I don’t know if he’ll buy in to this one. I’ll have to super clue it when he’s gone or something, haha.
